MA Fine Art at UWE Bristol is designed for individuals who wish to pursue their practice to a professional level and gain knowledge and insight into contemporary practice.

This course provides a structure to enable you to extend your practical, critical, contextual and theoretical knowledge of Fine Art and gain skills and experience in order to operate in a professional context beyond University.

There is no emphasis on a particular type of work. Students work in painting, installation, performance, sculpture, photography, moving image and drawing. This reflects contemporary practice and allows you to explore and experiment with a range of formats throughout your time here.

Teaching is based at City Campus at Spike Island, within this internationally renowned contemporary art venue on Bristol’s harbourside and part of UWE Bristol’s City Campus. Here you will benefit from a vibrant creative environment and a range of work and volunteering opportunities.

You will also have full access access to other City Campus sites and all that they have to offer.

You will study alongside a small yet diverse group of students providing support and sharing insights and perspectives.

Students highly value the teaching input and experience of research-active, practicing artists all of whom exhibit nationally and internationally.

Teaching is centred at Spike Island an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design – bringing further expertise, opportunities, access to public events and regular guest speakers.

City Campus at Bower Ashton offers you access to modern resources and workshops including sound, film, casting, photography, textiles and print. This will extend your knowledge of methods and techniques and support your creative development.

Finance and Investment


If you are seeking to move into a career in finance, our MSc in Finance and Investment will give you the practical and academically-rigorous grounding you need. Facade Engineering


Façade engineering is a discipline in its own right. Most large-scale commercial, industrial, educational and even residential buildings are now constructed using a frame and an envelope and many engineering firms have their own façade engineering departments. Our graduates are highly sought-after.

This is a unique course, working closely with CWCT and designed specifically for the industry – overcoming a severe skills shortage and making it easier for companies to find the staff they need.
You will learn why façades are one of the most complex, technically challenging and trans-disciplinary parts of a building, how to design and develop façades that perform technically and develop an architectural expression.

Applying theory to practice, you’ll cover key topics including façade materials and components, thermal performance and analysis, weathertightness, fire performance, structural analysis and procurement.

Environmental Law and Sustainable Development


Part of our comprehensive range of LLM programmes, the LLM in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development allows you to deepen your understanding of law relating to the environment and associated development issues.

You will engage with the legal and ethical challenges posed by sustainable development, and explore global environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity protection, water management and renewable energy, from the perspective of both developed and developing countries. By encouraging innovation in assessing current environmental problems, the course will prepare you to work in legal practice, whether you choose to go into a commercial organisation, the public sector or a non-governmental organisation.

Environmental Health


Our professionally-accredited, vocational master’s in environmental health has strong links to public and private sector employers, and taught content that reflects current and predicted industry trends. This course is aimed at graduates who are keen to acquire the professional skills needed to identify, assess, evaluate and control environmental factors that affect health.

The course content will educate and support anyone pursuing public or private sector careers that promote and protect human health and welfare. Thanks to our strong industry links, you’ll benefit from direct teaching input from employers across the South West, as well as excellent employment opportunities.

Our new hybrid delivery offers a blended learning approach that enables you to study flexibly. You’ll have the chance to study exclusively online or spend up to 50% of your time on campus for face-to-face learning. As a health professional, you’ll be able to develop your practice and expertise in environmental health issues through both onsite and online teaching. Plus, you’ll enjoy the added benefit of fitting your studies around your personal and professional commitments.


Direct routes to employment or career enhancement


The majority of our students go straight into related employment. With many securing positions before graduation, with employers such as national food and health, safety and environment organisations and consultancies, national retailers and the leisure/holiday sector, as well as local councils, or overseas with a growing international focus on environmental health issues. This is reflected in our increasing number of international applicants.

You’ll have the knowledge and experience in decision-making needed to identify and tackle environmental health issues in a wide range of contexts. You’ll also be ready to contribute significantly to existing environmental health practice, and to respond and initiate change in line with current and emerging public health issues.

On completing the course, you can continue your professional development by registering for the Chartered Practitioner Programme, delivered by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). You will be then designated as having achieved the highest professional level and able to use the nominals CEnvH.
