Teaching

The modules vary in the ways they are taught – some are taught weekly (eg Current Issues in Dementia Practice), some have a mixture of taught and online learning (eg Research Methods), whereas some have monthly sessions (eg Practice Project). The student can expect to be in university at least one day a week for the duration of the academic year.

However, it is expected that student will be studying independently for the duration of the course – either through directed online tasks and activities or through independent study for their various assignments.

Taught sessions will be delivered by academics, clinicians and service users. The course is designed so that learning can also occur through the students themselves (via in class discussions and group work). For each module, students will be given the contact details of both the module manager and an allocated academic supervisor.

They will also have the contact details of the course leader at the outset of their studies.

This university prides itself on supporting students and there are various support systems in place which any of the students can access (details are listed in the course handbook and readily available from module managers/course leader).

Assessment

The majority of the modules on this course are assessed by written assignments and presentations relating to the students specific area of practice or interest. There will be a variety of assessments including case studies, literature reviews, research proposals, practice-based project and presentation which give the opportunity of applying the learning to the students specific area of interests and practice.

MSc Cosmetic Medicine (Online Delivery)

The online MSc Cosmetic Medicine, run in partnership with Diploma MSc, is aimed at doctors, dentists and nurses who require a postgraduate qualification to support their professional learning and clinical development to become an aesthetic practitioner.

Increased regulatory requirements for those performing aesthetic procedures, both from Health Education England and regulatory authorities such as the GDC, GMC and NMC, mean that a formal postgraduate qualification is now an essential element of a healthcare practitioner’s journey to become an aesthetic practitioner.

Taught completely online, the Masters in Cosmetic Medicine has been developed with the express purpose of promoting and enhancing the professional knowledge underpinning practice in cosmetic medicine.

What you will study

Research Methodologies and Critical Appraisal: Cosmetic Medicine
This module, run over 12 weeks, is designed to help students recognise, understand, interpret and apply methods used in healthcare research and critically appraise the various methodologies specific to Cosmetic research.

Professional Project: Cosmetic Medicine
The module will depend on the creation of a piece of work based upon a specific clinically related project relevant to the student’s practice. This project may consist of a literature review and appraisal of the evidence; audit of practice including organisational or clinical; review and implementation of evidence-based practice; qualitative or quantitative research (formal research involving human subjects is not anticipated); case-based and quality of service review with critical appraisal; case report, review of literature and organisational assessment

Teaching

Although you’ll be learning online you will be part of a group with 10 to 15 other students. Your self-directed distance learning will be guided by tutor-stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios.

You’ll do a combination of individual and group projects, and you’ll have a reflective practice portfolio to help you consider how what you’re learning on the course can be translated into everyday work and practice.

You’ll have the support of a dedicated team who will help you with any challenges you may face – from help with navigating our online learning platform to advice on what you need to do to pass the course and meet deadlines.

Once you have secured your place on the course, you will be invited to an Online Induction Day Webinar. This will give you the opportunity to participate in study skills workshops on Harvard Referencing, scientific and reflective writings, and levels of evidence in preparation for your studies.

It is not compulsory for you to attend our Induction Day, but it is recommended as it’ll provide you with a sturdy introduction to the course.

Assessment

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1,500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). Note of any verbal communication with the tutor is recorded in the student’s journal by the student.

MSc Advanced Applied Field Geoscience

The MSc Advanced Applied Field Geoscience is the most fieldwork based MSc in the UK. This is a vocational MSc course that will give you with the knowledge, skills, competence and confidence to work in a wide range of practical geoscience careers, from engineering geology and mining to quarrying, petroleum geoscience and research.

Rather than focusing on an individual geoscience career path, we focus on providing a thorough training in a number of geoscience skills including digital data capture and visualisation, analytical methods and applied field geology. Petroleum Experts Ltd (Petex) has also donated 10 licences of the MOVE software suite, the commercial equivalent of which is £1,341,961.89 to support our teaching and learning.

Fieldwork trips could see students visit Finland, Azores, Spain and the UK along with work close to our campus in South Wales.

What you will study

The MSc Advanced Applied Field Geoscience is a one year (full time) or two year (part time) course. It comprises three 40 credit taught modules along with a 60 credit research dissertation. Each taught module is divided into four topics, with each topic delivered in a two week intensive teaching block.

  • Digital Geology
This comprises surveying and image analysis; digital mapping; surface and subsurface correlation and visualisation, and near surface geophysics. This includes training in digital mapping software packages and also industry standard 3D correlation and modelling software. As part of this module there is fieldwork in South Wales along with courses in Utah (USA) and southern Spain.
  • Analytical Geoscience
This focuses on how samples are collected and analysed and how resultant data are manipulated and interpreted. The module is structured through the different types of materials which might be sampled: water, air / soil, rock and geological commodities. For each, we focus on the practical skills involved in sample collection in a quality control and quality assurance framework. This is followed by the assessment of different analytical methods and how the data can be used to address different geoscience questions.
  • Applied Field Geology
This provides training in applied field-based geological data collection, related to natural hazards, mineral exploration and mining and in geotechnics and contaminated land. Natural hazards fieldwork is carried out in the volcanic islands of the Azores. Fieldwork related to mineral exploration methods leading through to successful mining operations is carried out in Finland. For geotechnics and contaminated land we will be working in Cornwall, including the opportunity to do underground geological mapping.
  • Research Dissertation
Here you can focus on a specific area of applied geology and use the information gained during the taught modules to carry out a research project or a commercial company placement.

Teaching

The three taught modules are delivered between September and April. Each module is divided into four topics, with each topic taught over a two week block. Teaching includes formal lectures, tutorials, practical classes, field/site visits, and field courses.

For each topic there are 18 formally taught hours along with field / site visits, field trips and directed learning. In total the formal taught classes and expected independent study equates to a full time job, with around 40 hours per week.

Some topics will be delivered by guest lecturers from industry and you will also have the opportunity to network with companies and guest speakers throughout the year. From May through to August you will be working on your research project, which may be a placement with industry.

Assessment

The MSc Advanced Applied Field Geoscience is based entirely on coursework. Each taught module is divided into four topics with one assessment for each topic.

The assessment types include 3,000 word written reports; verbal presentations; team reports and portfolios of field-based data.

The research dissertation is based on the submission of a report which will either be in the format of a scientific paper or as a commercial consultancy report.
