The Foundation Year in Human Resource Management forms part of an integrated four-year degree programme, and is designed for students who do not currently meet the admissions criteria for direct entry onto the BA (Hons) Human Resource Management.

This Human Resource Management course will allow you to explore areas including business, psychology and computing, alongside giving you the skills, knowledge and confidence to progress to continue onto a degree course and have the opportunity to meet your aspirations.

This course will be taught over three days per week to allow students to manage study around other work and family commitments.

BSc (Hons) Building Surveying (Including Foundation Year)

Building Surveyors are required to advise on and manage all aspects of the ever growing Built Environment.  As we utilise our buildings more efficiently and demand more from our urban spaces, the role of the building surveyor is becoming increasingly important.

You will learn how to advise on a range of topics from building control, building conservation, building defects, the planning system and the construction process.   You’ll be able to take responsibility for delivering buildings that are sustainable and designed to comply with all the necessary legal and regulatory requirements.

This course has been developed specifically to provide students with the skills required to fill an identified shortage in the Built Environment sector.


What you will study

Building Surveyors will study construction technology which is fundamental to the role. This knowledge is then developed through the legal and regulatory framework, such as building regulations, health and safety requirements and conservation issues. Sustainability and the efficient use of buildings is explored, alongside learning about the role of public and private housing providers and the wider provision of Welsh Housing Quality Standards.

You will develop core building surveying skills such identifying building defects, advising on suitable remedies, advising on planning applications and home purchases. Undertaking stock condition surveys, facilities management, developing maintenance schedules and dealing with conservation enquires.

Teaching

The Building Surveying degree is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials.

You will also get chance to participate in numerous site visits to local companies allowing you to see how the theory is applied in a professional setting. In addition to this, you will work independently to prepare for classes and complete project work.

Your studies here won’t confine you to a classroom. We don’t believe you can learn vital skills like analytical decision making and problem solving by just reading about them. That’s why we offer practical activities that help you understand and apply the theory you learn in lectures.

Assessment

Your assessments will involve examinations, coursework and problem-based exercises taught using real-life scenarios.

There are various employment opportunities in this field, nationally and internationally. You could work in private practice, property departments, construction and development companies, or with government organisations. You will also have the technical, legal, economic and construction skills to work in a variety of professional Built Environment roles.

BSc (Hons) International Wildlife Biology (Including Foundation Year)

If you don’t have the right qualifications to apply for the BSc (Hons) International Wildlife Biology, this course offers an alternative route into degree study. You’ll start by completing a foundation year, which provides well-structured support, before progressing to the first year of the degree.

Wildlife biology is the study of organisms, their behaviour, ecology, environment and management. You will study big game tracking, conservation genetics, wildlife management, ecology, vertebrate zoology, marine and freshwater biology and more.

There is a strong field element, providing opportunities for immersive learning on three continents. You will study the wildlife and habitats of different landscapes in South Africa; develop your scientific skills on UK field trips, and have the option to apply research techniques in the tropical forests and coral reefs of Asia or Central America.


What you will study

The intention of the foundation year is to build up your science knowledge. Beyond that, scientific understanding and scientific study approach are very much the focus.

Foundation Year: International Wildlife Biology Degree

  • Foundation Biology
    This will provide a basic knowledge of living things, and the processes which enable them to survive and reproduce. You will gain an appreciation of the evolutionary processes which lead to the modern diversity of the living world and explore basic biochemistry and cell structure.
  • Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
    This will provide a basic overview of the structure and function of the major organ systems of the human body. Lectures cover basic structure and function, and include examples of disorders and abnormalities associated with each system.
  • Key Skills and Professional Development
    This module introduce you to the key kills required to complete a science degree and engage in lifelong learning. These include identifying learning strategies, critical thinking, academic writing/practice, presentation skills, preparation for employment, and professional conduct.
  • Scientific Data Literacy
    This will provide you with the understanding and ability to apply simple mathematical tools to obtain, interpret, manipulate, present and explain the significance of scientific data and the role mathematics plays in the sciences. This is designed to develop and support your application of numerical literacy and data handling set in the broad context of science.
  • Foundation Chemistry
    This introduces the fundamental concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry. It enables you to use the symbolism and calculations involved in qualitative and quantitative descriptions of chemical reactions.
  • Physical Science
    This introduces you to fundamental concepts in the physical sciences. You will explore units, measurement and errors, atomic structure, the electronic structure of atoms, the stability of the nucleus and radioactivity.

Teaching

You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, computer exercises, practical classes, UK and overseas fieldwork.

The number of weekly hours you will receive per week will vary depending on the modules studied and year of study. Generally, you will have 48 hours of direct contact per (20-credit) module over an academic year, equating to around 12-15 contact hours per term week.

Outside of this time, you will be expected to commit around 80 hours to study guided by your lecturers and self-directed learning on each module (but more for your third year project). A further 70+ hours are normally required for students to prepare and complete assessments for each module. Residential field courses have more contact hours, supporting our hands-on approach to field learning.

Throughout the international wildlife biology course we invite guest lecturers from the ecological and conservation sector to help support your knowledge and understanding of contemporary wildlife biology scenarios. This is also a great opportunity to meet with potential employers, along with field trips and collaborations on third year projects.

Research-informed teaching

Your studies will be underpinned by the latest research undertaken by the University’s Applied Sciences Research Group which collaborates locally, nationally and internationally with partners from industry and academia to provide world-leading knowledge and impact. For you, this means you will be taught by academics who are at the forefront of their specialist field.

Assessment

You will be assessed using a combination of different assessment types, to support all facets of your learning and development. These include scientific reports and papers, oral presentations, critical reviews, digital outputs, problem solving and data analysis tasks,  in-class and online tests, laboratory exercises, practical competencies, field reports and written examination.

Assessment methods vary depending on the module and year of study. A number of modules are assessed through coursework and written examination, while other modules are continuously assessed with coursework only.

The breakdown of assessment methods for this course is: 9-27% practical assessment, 19-59% coursework, and 32-54% written examination.

This course is a future-focused and solution-based programme in environmental sustainability and climate change. Designed with industry and taught by experts in their fields, this BSc (Hons) Environmental Science course puts you at the forefront of environmental innovation and change.

On this experience-rich degree course, you will develop a broad range of practical, laboratory, field-based and project skills, including through working with external organisations and companies to improve environmental sustainability locally, nationally, and globally.

The course will enable you to have a positive and transformational impact as you engage society, business and government in future solutions for environmental sustainable development. It will also help you to gain the skills and expertise required for a career in the green economy, as you aim to find solutions to the many challenges our environment faces.


What you will study

This course has been designed with industry to be employment-focused and will give you knowledge, training, and experience in all of the key sectors for meeting the environmental challenges of the future.

The degree is organised into a series of themes, each linking to an employment sector. These themes include climate change, renewable resources and energy, biodiversity and conservation, environmental pollution, sustainable development, and environmental management.

The degree themes directly target important sectors of employment in sustainability within government bodies and organisations, consultancies, industry, and non-government organisations. These include the principal areas of environmental-related employment in recycling and renewables, pollution and environmental monitoring, land remediation, carbon emissions reduction, future climate adaptations, conservation, and ecosystem solutions.

Each theme is introduced in the first year to provide a background to that area, topics are developed in more detail in the second year, and in the final year, they are applied to consider solutions and provide training for specific career pathways you may wish to pursue.

Year 1 – Foundation Year

Foundation Ecology and Environmental Science

This will develop an understanding of ecological processes, the principal ecosystems and environments inhabited by living organisms, the principal human impacts on the natural environment, and provide an overview of basic methods of environmental sampling and measurement.

Foundations of Earth Science

This will introduce key concepts in earth science including rock types, rock formation and geological resources to consider environmental processes.

Foundation Chemistry

This introduces the fundamental concepts of inorganic and organic chemistry. It enables you to use the symbolism and calculations involved in qualitative and quantitative descriptions of chemical reactions.

Physical Science

Year 2

The Climate System

The module will introduce climate change. To understand it you will first consider the climate system and the Earth’s systems that affect atmospheric and climate processes, including atmospheric composition, circulation and weather systems. You will also study other areas that feed into the climate system, including the oceans, productivity in ecosystems and important geochemical cycles including the carbon cycle.

Resources and Materials

This will introduce you to our key natural resources, their use, extraction, sustainability, re-use/recycling, disposal and the concepts of a circular economy. It will include water resources, soil, construction materials, minerals and metals. It will consider the measurement of soil health and sustainable agriculture. It will also introduce material science, product design, reuse, recycling and separation technologies along with disposal and management.

Principles of Ecology

You will study population and community ecology, including population dynamics, strategies and habitat structure. The module will consider food webs, energy flow, biogeochemical cycles, trophic levels and pollution pressures, along with ecological successions, habitats, niches, microclimates and phenology. There will also be field and laboratory work, introducing practical identification skills.

Anthropocene

In this module you will study human activity impacts on natural systems (land, sea, air) and biota in the past, present and future. This will include landscape change, extinctions, large-scale resource extraction and exploitation, along with pollutants and contamination, including impacts on human health. You will then be able to consider the principles of environmental impact assessment.

The Sustainable Society

You will consider concepts of sustainable development and the challenges of integrating environmental, social and economic interests. This will include political ideologies and the way this has underpinned recent government thinking towards the economy, environment and society. Institutions, agencies, organisations and policies responsible for the delivery of sustainable development are considered from the global to the local scale.

Environmental Management and Skills Development

This module will develop your skills and experience, involved in multidisciplinary environmental site assessment and environmental impact assessments, developed as project work. This will develop your research and communication skills, allowing you to consider data generation and research methodologies. You will also be introduced to Geographical Information Systems to generate and visualise spatial data, and to consider locational data including using Global Positioning Systems.

 

Year 3

Climate Change

You will use a range of records of climate change to consider their natural and human-induced causes and understand the mechanisms for those changes. This will include larger and smaller-scale climate system shifts for a range of longer-term, abrupt and recent climate changes. You will also consider the consequences of those climate changes, including environmental and human impacts on different time scales, to consider recent impacts of climate changes against longer-term patterns.

Energy Systems

You will consider non-renewable and renewable energy systems. This will include conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon systems; nuclear energy systems and nuclear waste disposal; and geothermal energy including deep geothermal plants, ground source heating and cooling. It will also consider renewable energy technologies, resource assessment and utilisation, along with environmental impacts, including solar, wind, wave, tidal, biomass and hydrogen. You will also consider power storage and transmission, energy supply and demand and the reduction in energy demand through sustainable engineering and design.

Ecological & Wildlife Assessment

You will study the ecology and conservation of selected habitats and species of national and European importance, and consider biodiversity action plans, environmental policy and conservation assessment. You will consider ecological projects and information management from stakeholder consultation and other sources of biological information. Identification skills will be further developed for key taxonomic groups as part of biodiversity site appraisals and ecological assessments.

Environmental Contaminants: Detection and Remediation

This module will allow you to consider the detection, analysis, management and mitigation of environmental contaminants. You will be trained in contaminated land environmental impact assessment, including stages of site assessment, identification and characterisation of pollutant sources, sampling strategies and analytical methods. You will also consider various remediation strategies to manage contaminated environments.

Global Consumption

You will examine the centrality of consumption to everyday life and how it connects people and places across the world economically, socially, culturally, politically and environmentally. The relationship between spaces of production and consumption through interconnected networks from the local to global scale are explored and their environmental impact considered. These relations are assessed in relation to themes such as population changes, globalisation, economic trade and development, ethical consumption, alternative networks and waste.

Participatory Project Work

You will be involved in collaborative environmental and development projects with community groups, industrial or organisation partners. This will involve you in the design and implementation of projects and provide you with critical insight into breaking down the barriers (real and imagined) between industry, agencies, institutions, local government and the communities in which they are located and which they serve. It will develop your project management, teamwork, and leadership skills.

 

Optional year of study abroad, in industry or on a voluntary placement

Year 4

Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

In this module you will model future climate change scenarios and consider their impacts, risks management strategies and ways to develop resilience, including the needs, options, planning and implementation of adaptation strategies. You will also consider climate change mitigation, including current and future emissions reduction with carbon footprint reduction in a range of sectors including energy, transport, built environment, agriculture and industry. You will also consider carbon sequestration methods and holistic environmental management.

Resources of the Future

You will consider the material needs for a sustainable low-carbon future and future sustainability, including raw materials for the low carbon transition. This will include battery materials, supply and demand; mineral exploration and production, recycling and reprocessing. You will also consider material characterisation and analysis, recycling streams and the production of renewable materials.

Global Ecological Challenges

You will consider approaches to managing landscapes and species in response to global change, including future-proofing. This will include the importance of ecological networks and connectivity, habitat translocation, and the co-benefits of functioning ecological systems. You will be using biological indicators for the ecological monitoring of species and biological communities and identifying research needs in response to projected ecological changes.

Environmental Forensics

This module will use integrated case study and project work to provide you with training in gathering and managing data, including for environmental legal investigations. It will include aspects of environmental law and the role of environmental tools (botany, ecology, entomology, soil science, geology), crime scene sampling, analytical methods, the use of aerial imagery and drones, and methods for evidence reporting.

Sustainable Urban Futures

You will consider environmental and sustainability perspectives on the development of cities, including processes of social and cultural mobility, diversity and inclusion. This will include the key issues and political trajectories that shape contemporary urban spaces at the global, national and regional scale along with ways to manage increasing pressures associated with urban growth and renewal, with opportunities for improved future environmental management and solutions.

Independent Project

Your research project will be designed with full support from staff and will come from independent research or from a relevant industry, work or voluntary placement. It will allow you to develop a critical, in-depth analysis for an area of the course that most interests you, and further develop your project management skills.

Biomedical Science is an exciting, interdisciplinary subject exploring the normal functioning of the human body at the molecular, cellular and whole organism levels and how understanding these processes enables breakthroughs in the treatment of human disease and improvements to health.

Teaching

The course is based at Bower Ashton, part of the City Campus, in the creative heart of Bristol. Bower has exceptional facilities and resources which include a news studio, TV studio and post production areas which offer the latest technology.

Engaging, industry-led teaching


On this Masters course you will learn all you need to know via technical workshops, seminars, masterclasses and through experience and opportunities making films and digital content for clients. We also help you develop skills in research, script writing, directing, producing, production management and the pitching and commissioning of ideas.

One of the unique aspects of this course is that you will be matched with an industry mentor who, alongside your tutor, will guide you through the production of your final project. All students complete their Masters by writing, directing and producing a final project/film. These films are premiered each year and seen by an audience of invited film and television professionals from the BBC and independent sector.

MA Virtual and Extended Realities is an industry-led course designed to address increased demand for expertise in immersive storytelling. The course is open to passionate graduates who want to enter the radical world of virtual, augmented and extended reality production.

We welcome students from all disciplines and backgrounds, and are looking for people with ideas about how their unique perspective and diverse experiences can contribute to this young and fast-evolving industry.

Your background may be in journalism, filmmaking, experience design, education, marketing or theatre. Perhaps your specialism is in storytelling, software, sound design or circus.

Urban Planning


MSc Urban Planning is suited to a range of entrants – graduates from related disciplines, such as geography, professionals from planning practice and those from non-related backgrounds who are passionate about the subject. It is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and prepares you for work as a planner in a wide range of roles, including in local or central government, private practice and the third sector. We also prepare you for potential work outside the UK, with an international context to the knowledge and skills you develop.


Linking learning with current practice


The course comprises advanced postgraduate study in urban planning and is firmly underpinned by a wide range of research, some of which is carried out by the course’s excellent teaching staff and by faculty scholarships, consultancy and links with practice. Indeed, learning is strongly linked to practice, helping you become an effective, professionally qualified planner.

It also offers a range of study patterns to allow easier access to the course. Available over one or two years, it includes ‚time out’ options to help you manage your personal and professional commitments around your studies.
